Calling all you elderly, wizened pre-crones!

Ancient woman, have you considered expanding your family or becoming pregnant for the first time, but find yourself fearful, second-guessing your desire for motherhood, or listening to doctors or family members who have suggested either covertly (or right out loud) that you’re just a little bit…too old?

Did your gynaecologist give you a concerned and somewhat pitying look when you mentioned you might want to have another baby?

Have you been “risked out” of homebirth with a midwife on account of being overripe?

In all seriousness though, I do get it.

As a mother who recently gave birth to my ninth baby at the age of 40 (and no, I’m probably not done yet), and a birth-consultant and witness of 20 years, I’ve heard it all.

I also profoundly understand the yearning and the tenderness involved in navigating these waters—waters that tend to be so tarnished by myth, assumption, and fear-based social conditioning.

And yet at the same time, our fears in this domain are very real.

In this 2.5 hour Salon, I shared everything I know and believe about pregnancy after the age of 35, as well as my personal philosophy on mothering, age, beauty, death, and energetic sovereignty, including my answers to questions like:

  • How will my body handle pregnancy in my late-thirties, forties, or beyond, and how can I optimize my comfort, stamina, and wellbeing?
  • How do I go about assessing safety and risk as a mature mother?
  • What are the distinctions between having my first baby at 40+, or my 10th?
  • What about the fear that as a mother over the age of 35, my baby might have a higher chance of chromosomal differences, or developmental distinctions?
  • What about prenatal testing and assessments? How do I decide which diagnostics to accept and which to decline?
  • How do I decide whether or not it’s safe for me (and my baby) to give birth at home?
  • What if my vagina and pelvic organs fall out and my sexuality is negatively impacted?
  • What are the indications that I really am “too old” to have a baby?
  • What about my sex life in general as an “older mom”?
  • How do I determine whether or not homebirth is advisable as a mature mother?
  • How do I keep up with a newborn baby when/if my energy stores are depleted?
  • What if I die and my children are left alone?
  • Is IVF or Surrogacy an option for women who are 40+—what are the benefits, risks, or concerns to consider when it comes to reproductive technology?

This pre-recorded salon includes a short intro, and an open space for the women who joined me live to share their fears and concerns, and to have all their questions answered.
